Born in Toyama Prefecture in 1976, Tanino is the president of Niwa Gekidan Penino, as well as its very own playwright and director. He was also Senior Fellow of the Saison Foundation until 2015. He founded Niwa Gekidan Penino in 2000 while still a medical student, and has since written and directed all of the company’s performances. The company has been invited to many major drama festivals in Japan and overseas, particularly in Europe. Aside from the company, he wrote and directed “Chekhov?!” for Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in January 2011. It was received favorably for the realization of the inextricable insanity and beautiful psychological world. In March 2015, he presented his new work “Mizu no Ori (“Käfig aus Wasser”) in Germany, and in 2016, he won the 60th Kishida Prize for Drama for “Jigokudani Onsen Mumyo no Shuku (The Dark Inn)”. He also won Kitanippon Shimbun Arts Award in 2016 and Excellence Award for the 71st ACA (Agency for Cultural Affairs) National Arts Festival.
