Musician/composer born in Kishiwada, Osaka in 1982 and currently resides in Kyoto. She studied at the University of York in York, England and completed the graduate program in Community Music. Through the help of Javanese gamelan percussive instruments and an assortment of other instruments, Yabu creates music works which makes use of natural sounds, a richness in sound quality, and the timbre of music. Some recently composed works include a collaboration with workshop participants titled “Kiku, tsukamu, hanatsu”, the koto
instrumental duet “One Mouth and Three Ears” (2016), and more. She also produces music for many theater performances. Yabu heads an improvisation-based gamelan music group in Kyoto called Sekar Gendis
. Using the rich tone of Javanese gamelan ensemble music alongside the flexible nature of these traditional musical instruments, she develops musical activities emphasizing both improvisation and composition. She has launched improvisational music projects under the motto of "wait, build, and respect", and presents new possibilities for gamelan music and collaborative composition.
