Takasegawa Monitoring Club

Japan/extracurricular activities
Excavated in 1614 by a wealthy Kyoto merchant, Ryoi Suminokura, the Takase River - once a canal that the Takase boats traveled through - still runs through the city of Kyoto today as a waterway. By taking a peek into the Takase River, one can encounter a variety of living creatures. The club members think about the past, present, and future of the Takase River by peering into the world of these living creatures.

Searching for lifeforms in Kinosaki's Otani River…
What will the river monitoring club members discover through observation?

A residential camp project organized by the Takasegawa Monitoring Club, a group of artists who have been exploring the relationship between rivers and people through observing and recording the creatures that inhabit the Takase River that flows through the city of Kyoto. The club will observe and record the creatures in the Otani River that flows through the hot spring town of Kinosaki, reexamining the river from inside out. The club will conduct a workshop with local residents to put the "searching" method of monitoring that they have been practicing as a group into practice. They will also focus on the flow of the Otani River, which connects to a brackish water area via the Maruyama River and attempt to expand their monitoring field with an eye toward connecting to new areas.
