EVENT
Artocrite Theater(藝君子劇團)
Screening of “I am Tree”
1/4
Exploring social and political themes, Artocrite Theater—a rising company in Hong Kong's contemporary theater scene—shares a screening of an excerpted version of their 2023 production “I am Tree”.
Inspired by “The Vegetarian” by Han Kang—the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature—and “The Reveries of the Solitary Walker” by French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the production explores the complexity of contemporary relationships through a tale of determination, defiance and self-sacrifice.
Human and vegetation share a co-existence relationship in our daily lives. Numerous literatures and plays have used vegetation as a metaphor for humanity. Drawing inspiration from different plants and their distinct qualities, Artocrite Theater takes vegetation as the theme to explore the vulnerability of humans and the dilemmas in everyday life and question about human nature and our existence.
After the event, there will be a post-talk with Satoko Ichihara, Artistic Director of KIAC, where you can learn more about the work and hear directly from the artists.
We warmly welcome everyone to join us for this special gathering.
Synopsis
Waking from a dream of a tree, a woman decides to stop eating meat. Those around her react in different ways – her husband dismisses her choice as a fad, her nephew views her as a muse for an art project, and her sister blames her for causing family chaos. But does anyone really see or hear her real motivations?
