“DIY Yõkai Night” by Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot (BVDS)
Work-in-progress sharing of the residency “How to be healthy in a sick world?”
1/4
Amsterdam-based interdisciplinary artist-duo Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot (BVDS) will research Butō and Yõkai in this residency titled "How to be healthy in a sick world?" for the creation of their new work.
Tracing seemingly negative motifs such as trauma or sickness, they envisage a performance that responds to today's “sick” society, full of difficulties through this residency.
In their KIAC residency BVDS will look into the possibilities to approach Yõkai as a contemporary DIY practice.
Can we as a community take care of our contemporary anxieties by the joy of creating / birthing new Yõkai?
With Yõkai as an ancient technology, BVDS will dive into the possibilities of contemporary visual and bodily Yõkai-presence, through bodily transformations, disguises, masks, costumes and play.
At the end of the residency, together with local partners, they will organize a contemporary form of gathering called "DIY YOKAI”, sharing these research works, as a practice to collectively sit with the trouble that lives within today’s community and to discover how playing with the mysterious can bring us pleasure.
