OPEN CALL for the Artist-In-Residence Program 2024/2025

Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 Artist-In-Residence program at the Kinosaki International Arts Center (KIAC), a creative residence facility centered on performing arts.
The "Artist-in-Residence Program" has two criteria, "Response to Society" and "Critical Creativity", and will actively adopt and support artists and projects that critically examine the relationship between arts and the society in which we live. We are looking forward to receiving applications for projects that have the potential to present unprecedented value to society through collaboration with us.

Application details

■Intended program period
1st April 2024 - 31st March 2025
*Excluding one month of September 2024

■Eligible projects
The following two points are necessary application requirements:
- The project should be focused on contemporary performing arts.
In addition to artistic activities and research, it is possible for art-related personalities to hold events such as lectures and symposiums.
- The residency should be realizable
The results of past activities, production and implementation systems, budget plan, scale of activities, schedule, and methods of progress management deemed appropriate.

*The selection process does not depend on whether or not there is a plan to present or perform the results of the residency or the project after the residency. Residency for research and work-in-progress is also acceptable.
*Invalid projects:
- Projects that do not have a creative purpose (with the exception of lectures and symposiums).
- Projects organized by community centers, student clubs, or associations (For these cases, the hall and the studios can be rented for a fee).
- Projects which main goal is to raise donations for charity organizations.
- Projects that are aimed to be shared to a strictly restricted audience such as a specific group or organization.
- Already-existing projects that were purchased beforehand.


■Support
Kinosaki International Arts Center will support the artists with providing space for creation and accommodation and, staff as follows:
1.) Free use of Kinosaki International Arts Center hall and studios.
2.) Free use of the residence of up to 7 rooms.
3.) Technical staff and coordinators will support the creation and research.
*As a general rule, fees related to the cost of advertising and promotion, personnel expenses for all the staff involved in the production, transportation to Kinosaki, etc. must be covered by the applicant.

■Application Requirements
1.) Individual artists or groups of artists can stay at Kinosaki International Arts Center for their artistic activities for a minimum of three days to a maximum of three months.
2.) Artists are required to be able to speak and understand basic Japanese or English. If they don’t, artists should hire an interpreter at their own expense.
3.) Artists are required to be independent and capable of working and living on their own doing their laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc.
4.) Artists are expected to be willing to communicate with the locals and tourists through the Local Community Exchange Program. (See details below)
5.) Artists must follow the rules and regulations of Kinosaki International Arts Center. In case of any violation, artists will have to pay a penalty.
6.) Artists must cover all travel and living expenses and all production costs.

■Expectations upon acceptance
1.) During their stay, artists must be involved in the Local Community Exchange Program(*) by organizing activities that will encourage creative exchange with the locals and tourists.
2.) When presenting a piece of work that has been created at KIAC, artists must credit Kinosaki International Arts Center (Toyooka City) by printing the facility name and its logo on all promotional material.
3.) Artists must agree to help promote Kinosaki International Arts Center by sharing photos, videos and information. (However, all rights related to the work created during their stay belong to the artists involved).

*About the Local Community Exchange Program
Artists are asked to introduce their work and its creative process to the locals and tourists through events such as presentations of the finished work, rehearsal performances, open studios, workshops, talk shows, etc. in order to create opportunities to exchange together.
*Should artists put on a public performance of their finished work and charge an entrance fee, after consultation with the secretariat, a part of this fee will be given to Toyooka City.

■How to apply
Applicants are required to submit all of the items listed below by email (to air2024@kiac.jp) by 17:00 Japan Standard Time on Monday, 26th June 2023. Please write in the subject line of the email “Application for the 2024 AIR program” and attach the following documents:

1.) Application Form (WORD) / Application Form (PDF) (Click to download)
2.) Performance review of past works or recommended comment (A4 size / any format).

*As a general rule, all applications must be sent by email. However, if sent through the regular mail, please make sure they arrive at Kinosaki International Arts Center before the deadline.
*We will send an email to confirm we have received your application. If you do not receive this email within 2 days of sending your application, please contact Kinosaki International Arts Center.
*Please feel free to send any useful additional reference material such as a plan of your proposed activities, newspaper/magazine articles, critiques and reviews, etc. (all in A4 size).

17:00 Japan Standard Time on Monday, 26th June 2023.
*This deadline is final. Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances




Screening

■Screening process
The Selection Committee (4 outside experts and staff of Kinosaki International Arts Center) will screen all applicants. If needed, we may contact some of the applicants for an interview during the screening process.

■Selection Criteria
Artists and projects with a high level of awareness in the points of "Response to Society" and "Critical Creativity" will be evaluated.
≪Response to Society≫ Is the artist or project responding in some way to the current society and environment in which we live through their artistic activities?
≪Critical Creativity≫ Does the projects have the potential to critically examine existing values and common sense, and to update them in terms of art?

*Specifically, projects with the following characteristics have been selected so far, but not all projects have all of these characteristics.
Diffusibility: Projects or activities that have the potential to be shared and the potential to spread the name of Toyooka/Kinosaki both nationally and internationally.
Internationality: Projects or activities that involve multiple countries and languages.
Locality: Projects or activities involving the use of regional resources in Toyooka and Kinosaki, or research regarding social issues.
Innovativeness: Projects or activities combining different fields, suggesting new ideas and skills that are unheard of in the performing arts world.
Artistic Potential: Projects or activities that will have an impact on artistic expression in the future.
Multidisciplinary: Projects or activities that are not limited to the performing arts but also cross over into other artistic fields such as contemporary art.
